Metro sends specialized vehicle to survey condition of roads

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A different type of truck will be patrolling Nashville streets, and this one will be helping improve the roads we all drive.

The digital survey vehicle will drive along about half of all the roads in Metro.

It can actually detect which roads are in bad shape by gathering high-quality images of the pavement and the level of distress that the road is in.

"We're able to actually collect all of the distressors on our roadway infrastructure. So instead of just going out and repaving the road, we can come up with other methods of repairing the road that will increase the life cycle and save the taxpayers money," said paving manager Don Reid.

City engineers then use that information to plan maintenance projects in the most effective manner.

The high-tech truck will cover nearly 1,400 miles this month.
