NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) -

Over 30 positions at Xavier University have been or will be cut, according to a letter dated Tuesday by President Michael J. Graham, S.J.

Graham says in total, 31 people have been or are in the process of being informed that their employment will end.

In all, 51 of nearly 1,000 positions, including 20 currently vacant, have been cut.

Graham says he has been working with the Senior Executive Team and cabinet members to identify additional permanent savings through personnel reductions in an effort to complete the FY14 budget and advance the school's strategic financial and academic plan.

"...The changing world of higher education requires a tighter alignment of all our resources with our mission, vision and strategy to secure the long-term health and vitality of Xavier University and the students we serve," writers Graham to the XU community.

Xavier University is a Jesuit, Catholic university serving primarily as an undergraduate, liberal arts institution. Over 6,500 students are enrolled in both the undergraduate and graduate level.
