President Reagan proclaimed the third Sunday in July (July 21) as "National Ice Cream Day" in 1984 and the designation remains today.

To honor national Ice Cream Day, we take a look at the best ice cream shops in the Cincinnati area. This list comes from

  2. Dojo Gelato: Opened in 2009, owner Michael Christner focused his efforts on freshness and quality, not quantity. Christner studied classic gelato techniques with Italian pastry masters in New York City and brings the unique taste to Cincinnati.
  3. Putz's Creamy Whip: Family owned and operated since 1938, the ice cream store was opened in a pair of trolley cars. The historic ice cream shop has since become a favorite of many tri-state families.
  4. The Root Beer Stand: "The Stand" initially opened as an A & W Root Beer Stand in 1957. Since then, Cincinnati Magazine has named it as the best place to quaff a root beer in town.
