Big Brothers and Big Sisters recognized for empowering youth

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati announced the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Year at Coney Island's Moonlight Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

More than 200 adult Big Brothers and Big Sisters attended the event in addition to their Little Brothers and Little Sisters.

Tom Murray, Chairman of the Board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati, said that the event is a day to celebrate volunteers.

"It takes the volunteers to make Big Brothers work. Mentoring changes lives, and what our mission is to help young people, and to help them with their lives," said Murray.

Two Big Brothers, two Big Sisters, and one Big Couple were recognized for their dedication to the youth.

Volunteers of Big Brother Big Sisters are referred to as "Bigs" which are individuals who spend at least one hour a week with youth for a year. "Littles," the youth, come from different types of environments and family situations according to Murray.

The afternoon was filled with stories that discussed the positive impact of mentoring for young people.

Several of the Little Brothers and Little Sisters will receive scholarship awards to help with financial aid for the upcoming fall semester.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati matches adult volunteer mentors with Tri-State children who can benefit from a positive role model.

At least 400 youth remain on a waiting list to receive a Big Brother or Big Sister.
