Highland Co. warns of rash of mailbox bombs

HIGHLAND COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The Highland County Sheriff's office is warning the public about a rash of random mailbox bombs.

In the past several days, the Highland County Sheriff's Office has investigated reports of homemade chemical "bombs" placed in citizens mailboxes in Liberty and Union Townships.

Suspects appear to using a plastic drink container and when chemicals and substances are added to the container the lid is placed on the container and the container is placed in the mailbox.

A chemical reaction then takes place and pressure builds inside the container until the container explodes. This causes damage to the mailbox and in turn the reactionary chemicals are spewn in and around the area of the mailbox.

No injuries have been reported thus far.

The sheriff's office is warning citizens to be mindful when getting their mail and to look for signs around the mailbox before opening the box as even the residue from these chemicals can cause burns.

The sheriff's office is asking you to call 9-1-1 if you think your mailbox has been tampered with.
