Evacuees can return

Evacuees from the Florida Keys are now permitted to return home, having been spared the wrath of Hurricane Ivan. Authorities this morning lifted the evacuation orders that began Thursday for tourists and residents in the Keys. In the state's Panhandle, authorities are expected to decide today whether to order evacuations. As one building contractor put it, Ivan is a "scary-looking hammer knocker." During the weekend, residents of communities along the Gulf of Mexico boarded up their windows and stocked up on food -- as Ivan tore through the Caribbean.

The hurricane is now a Category Five storm and could strike somewhere along the Gulf Coast after first hitting Cuba. Residents from west-central Florida to the Louisiana marshes are being advised to remain alert. Ivan has killed at least 65 people across the Caribbean.
