10-year-old qualifies for largest amateur motocross race

(WMC-TV) - 10-year-old Gracie Sparks has been practicing on the Hidden Valley motocross track outside of Covington for weeks.

She's getting ready for one of the biggest sporting events of her ten years of life.

For her, it's a dream come true.

Sparks says all this riding has consumed most of her summer and she wouldn't have it any other way.

"It's just unique and fun," says Sparks.

Sparks got into Motocross racing three years ago after a suggestion by her dad.

Now, this enclosed, off-road racing has become her life.

"There's no team. If you win, it's not anyone else helping you," she continues.

Sparks said her sights quickly rose to the top.

In fact, she's now headed to the world's largest amateur motocross tournament, held in Hurricane Mills, TN on the Loretta Lynn Dude Ranch.

Sparks is making history.

"Its just fun being the only person around here that made it to Loretta's, the only girl around here," she adds.

Sparks says she's gotten ready for next week's competition by practicing three times a week, in twenty minute intervals.

She says it's a dangerous sport, much different than simple bicycle or motorcycle riding.

"You don't pedal with your feet. You have to move your wrists to go faster than a bicycle," adds Sparks.

Sparks says she played basketball for a short time, but got bored with it.

That's not the case with motocross.

"You gotta have fun doing it. You can't be too serious about it all the time," she continues.

Sparks competes next week at the Hurricane Mills amateur tournament on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The events will be televised live next Saturday on NBC sports.
