Kids excited for Toledo's first mountain bike jump park

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's a first for the city of Toledo.

A mountain bike jump park opened Saturday at Jermain Park on the corner of Upton and North Cove.

The park is now open from sunrise to sunset.

Admission is free.

What's interesting is the city provided the park space and the dirt for the hills and mounds, but that's it.

"We used a lot of dirt from the wastewater industrial project. And it's been working perfectly," said Danny Garvin, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Commissioner.

The park was designed and will be run by a volunteer group called 'Right Direction.'

The group works with kids who are interested in action sports like mountain biking.

The kids are taught life skills and reasons to give back to the community.

"It gives them a chance to test a new sport, come out to something available in their community and try it for the first time. Some kids may like to ride and others may like to maintain the jumps and help other kids who want to be part of our program," said Don DiBartolomeo of Right Direction.

The park is a big deal for Toledo bikers.

The closest similar park is in Northwood.

Now the kids can stay in town.

"It's a lot of fun. I like to ride my bike and jump things. It's just really fun," said bike rider David Lieb.

I just like the freedom of doing what you want. Can escape by doing tricks. It's a lot of fun," said Mike Varga.

But there's also an emphasis on safety.

Bikers are only allowed on the course if they wear a helmet.
