Ivan Taking Its Toll

Ivan taking its toll

Tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Ivan have killed at least seven people in Florida. Televised reports  say five people were killed when a tornado swept through "multiple homes" near Blountstown.

Damage is said to be extensive. Tornadoes elsewhere took two more lives and a child was killed when a tree fell onto a mobile home. Hundreds of thousands of customers are without power. In the Pensacola area, four hospitals and five shelters have taken damage but patients and evacuees are safe.

Officials say the National Guard and aid agencies are ready to work. In Alabama, the mayors of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have closed the area to re-entry until further notice so they can assess damage. Louisiana officials plan to survey the damage this morning but New Orleans was spared the worst of Ivan.
