Authorities: Man fell asleep while driving, severed gas line
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A gas leak shut down Big Oak Bay Rd. and Highway 64 near Lake Tyler for three hours Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said a man fell asleep behind the wheel of his truck, running off the road and into above-ground gas meters just after 3:30 P.M. on Sunday.
Chapel Hill Fire and Smith County Sheriff's deputies shut down the road until energy crews were able to cut off the gas just before 7 P.M.
The Department of Public Safety said the man driving the truck initially fled the scene, but later returned and filed an accident report with a DPS trooper.
Diane Mathis said neighbors first alerted her to the leak that happened right in front of her house.
"I could hear it spewing out," Mathis said. "It sounded like rushing water and you could smell a real strong smell of gas. My daughters had just got home from work and we went to Walmart and came back about an hour later."
Trooper Jean Dark with DPS says no charges will be filed.
