Amish man life-flighted to hospital, after his buggy was struck by an SUV

ASHLAND COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

Troopers from the Ashland Post of the Highway Patrol are investigating a serious injury crash involving an Amish buggy on US 42 at milepost 18 in Jackson Township.  

The incident occurred at 10:10 a.m Tuesday when Robert Kanuch Sr., 70, of Nova, Ohio, operating a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, was northbound on US 42 struck the rear of an Amish buggy.

The Amish buggy was northbound on US 42 utilizing the right edge of the roadway and berm. The buggy was driven by Jacob Swartzentruber, 66, of Polk, Ohio.

Upon impact Swartzentruber was ejected from the buggy.

Swartzentruber was transported by Metro Life Flight to Cleveland Metro Hospital from the scene with serious injuries.  

Kaunch was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

The horse pulling the buggy also received minor injuries from the crash.  

Ashland County Sheriff's Department, Ashland Fire Department, Polk-Jackson Fire Department and EMA Director provided assistance at the scene. 

Both the north and southbound lanes were closed for a short time for life flight to land and for the removal of the vehicles. 

Roadway was open without further incident at 11:20 a.m. 

The traffic crash is still under investigation.
