ISP: Baby locked inside car while parents shop

SCOTTSBURG, IN (WAVE) – The parents of a 16-month-old baby left alone inside a locked car Sunday night were arrested on child neglect charges, according to Indiana State Police.

Clayton Koch, 25, of Deputy, IN and Ashley Davis, 22, of Scottsburg told police they left the child in the car because the child was sleeping when they went inside the Jay C Food Store in Scottsburg around 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said the baby spent approximately 20 minutes locked inside a white 2001 Mitsubishi, buckled into a car seat.

Police said troopers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant near the store when a woman came to them stating a small child was locked in a car with no parents or guardians in or around the vehicle. One trooper stayed with the baby while the other trooper went inside the store and located the parents. The child was uninjured.

Koch and Davis were charged with felony neglect of a dependent. They were taken to the Scott County Jail.

The child is in the custody of the Division of Family and Children in Scott County.
