FOX19 Investigates: Taser weapons used in the Tri-State

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A Taser death is Sycamore Township remains under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. Experts say technology in Tasers has developed over the years, and it's important to know the differences in the weapon.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, the type of Taser used in Tuesday's incident was what's called a model x2 Taser.

An email from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department to FOX19 states:

"We are still in the process of issuing it to our officers. This model is replacing the model x26 we were previously using."

Most local law enforcement agencies use either x26 or x2 model Tasers, and there are many similarities and a few differences.

"They work the same. They have the same electricity and the same output," said Chief Paul Hartinger with the Blue Ash Police Dept. "Virtually, everything is the same."

The Blue Ash Police Department is one of the first local agencies to get the x26p model of Taser. It's similar to the x2 model used by Hamilton County sheriff's deputies.

"When you pull the trigger, it monitors the output," said Hartinger. "It basically communicates back and forth so we know when we download the data from this Taser. We know how much power is being put out."

The x2 and x26p models allow for the Taser to be hooked up to a computer, giving instantaneous data. The previous model, the x26, doesn't have that capability.

Law enforcement officials say a Taser is a necessary tool.

"Some people just react differently when they are tased," said Hartinger. "But I can tell you training, used all over the world hundreds and thousands of times, the Taser has a good outcome."

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department has never had a Taser-related death before Tuesday's incident.
