MASON, OH (FOX19) -

American Sloane Stephens stunned Maria Sharapova under the lights on Tuesday night.

The 17th ranked Stephens defeated Sharapova 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the second round of the Western & Southern Open.

Down a set and two games in the second, Stephens was able to overcome the odds to defeat the no. 3 seed in a match that lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Tuesday marked Sharapova's return to the court following a hip injury in the second round of Wimbledon. Sharapova won the Western & Southern Open in 2011 and was a finalist in 2010.

Stephens will play either Jelena Jankovic or Ekaterina Makarova in the Round of 16.
