Shooting victim Alisha Waters makes dramatic improvement

CORRYVILLE, OH (FOX19) -

Alisha Waters, the woman who was shot five times at her Ft. Thomas workplace last week, has dramatically improved, her brother tells FOX19. Waters is now able to speak and is in good spirits.

"This morning, she was smiling," said her brother, Kurt Russell. "She's real talkative as always. We've been calling her Chatty Cathy."

Important milestones remain: Getting her off the ventilator, curing her of the pneumonia she's suffering from, and eventually enrolling her in physical therapy. However, a doctor told Waters last night that she will probably never again be able to use her arms and legs. But she didn't despair, according to her family.

"As long as I have my family, my voice, and my spirit I will be fine!" she reportedly told them.

Because of the enormous medical costs that may exceed Waters' insurance policy, her family has set-up a donation fund at the Bank of Kentucky. It's under her still-legal married name, Alisha Mathis. Meanwhile, if you'd like to offer words of support or keep updated on how Waters is doing, her family has launched a webpage on Caring Bridge.

Russell says his sister could be recovering in the hospital for months before doctors release her.
