PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A burglary suspect who police said snuck into a north Portland home through an open bedroom window was found curled around a 6-year-old girl early Sunday morning, according to court documents.
Portland police said Pedro Santiago Machi-Menchu, of Vancouver, entered the home on North Nashton Street just before 1 a.m. The open window had an air conditioning unit, but Machi-Menchu was able to squeeze past the unit, one roommate said.
Kyler Pulfrey, 21, lives at the home and woke up because his girlfriend complained the air conditioning was making her cold.
He went to the bedroom and found Machi-Menchu on the floor, wrapped around the girl, whose pants were pulled down, according to Pulfrey.
Pulfrey told police he pulled Machi-Menchu off the girl and a struggle ensued, officers said. He eventually dragged Machi-Menchu into the living room while a roommate called 911. He held Machi-Menchu down until police arrived.
"Basically, it was a fight for power. I was trying to detain him and he was trying to get away," Pulfrey said. "And I didn't want him going anywhere, so I made sure he wasn't going anywhere."
Officers rushed to the home and took Machi-Menchu into custody.
Child abuse detectives then launched an investigation and ultimately arrested Machi-Menchu, 21, on charges of first-degree burglary and first-degree attempted sex abuse. Once he was treated for injuries at a Portland hospital, he was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
When he pleaded not guilty in a Portland courtroom Monday, Machi-Menchu had visible injuries - a black eye and scratches.
The young victim does not live at the north Portland home, but she is the goddaughter of Emily Cooler, who lives at the house.
"I still see him on the floor. I wake up during the night ... see him lying there on the floor. I couldn't sleep last night. I could hardly sleep in that room," Cooler said.
According to the girl's godparents, doctors examined the victim and found no signs of sexual abuse.
Police described stranger-to-stranger assaults like this one as "extremely rare."
