LIBERTY, IN (FOX19) - A southeast Indiana jail officer is facing federal charges involving child pornography.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana Joseph Hogsett announced Monday that Derek Walton, 31, of Liberty, Indiana has been charged with child exploitation.
According to investigators, Walton has been employed as a reserve Sheriff's Deputy at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office since 2004 where he works as a jail officer.
Federal agents first became aware of an individual allegedly sending images and videos of child pornography through an AOL email account, which was later shut down by AOL. A second email account was discovered by agents while investigating a sexual offender, who had exchanged child pornography with the first email account.
Hogsett says these two email accounts, along with an additional account already known to investigators, have been allegedly traced to Walton and accessed repeatedly from the Franklin County Security Center.
Secondly, a small video camera was found hidden in a can in the living room, allegedly containing more explicit material with a female minor.
Hogsett's office recently launched Operation Community Watch, an effort to reduce the abuse of Indiana children through innovative investigative techniques and aggressive prosecution.
Prior to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Walton was previously employed by the Union County Sheriff's Office as a reserve deputy and jail officer, as well as a deputy marshal for the Laurel Police Department.
Prosecutors say if convicted of child exploitation, Walton could face decades in federal prison.
Indictments are only a charge and are not evidence of guilt.
