DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -
All of East Llilac Lane in DeKalb County was evacuated Tuesday after a gunman entered a school on Second Avenue earlier in the day.
DeKalb County police have the unnamed 19-year-old gunman in custody after responding to Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy.
It is believed police are at the suspect's home.
Police said the gunman entered the school with a gun and held a few staff members captive in the front office. The suspect fired about a half dozen shots upon officers from inside the school when they arrived.
The gunman had an AK-47 and a couple of other firearms.
Officers fired back at the suspect. A school secretary urged the suspect to surrender, which he then did. No one was injured.
A team of investigators from the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and officers from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, the DeKalb County Police Department, DeKalb County school resource officers as well as U.S. Marshals from the northern district of Georgia gained entry to the building and arrested the suspect without injury.
After making the arrest, the suspect was immediately turned over to the DeKalb County Police Department.
Children were evacuated from the building and taken to a field.
Authorities suspected there could be bomb materials in the suspect's car and took the children to the back of the school.
Officers cut a hole in a nearby fence and took the kids to waiting buses on a nearby street.
SERFTF personnel then joined in searching and securing the rest of the school.
The children were taken to Walmart on Gresham Road to be reunited with their parents.
A loud boom was heard from the school after the students were moved to Walmart. The bomb squad detonated the explosives found in the suspect's trunk.
Officials said children will attend school tomorrow at McNair High School.

I just want you to know that I love you though, OK? And I'm proud of you. That's a good thing that you're just giving up and don't worry about it.
