PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man who shot a convenience store clerk in the leg during a holdup is on the loose and Phoenix police need help finding him.

The suspect walked into an AMPM store at 2230 W. Indian School Rd. Saturday at around 10:05 p.m.

He removed items from the shelf and left without paying, said Phoenix police Sgt. Darren Burch of Silent Witness. The suspect fled in a white, four-door sedan.

Later that night, the suspect returned to the store armed with a gun. He held it in his hand, walked to the counter and ordered the clerk to give him money and cigarettes, Burch said.

The suspect then shot the clerk in the leg and fled in the same vehicle.

The clerk was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

The gunman is described as black and between 25 to 35 years old, 5'9" tall and weighing 250 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black denim jeans, white tennis shoes and a red baseball cap with a black rim.

Silent Witness is appealing to the public for help in solving the crime. Anyone who can identify the suspect captured in a surveillance picture or has knowledge of the crime can call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS OR 480-TESTIGO to provide the information. The toll-free number is 1-800-343-TIPS.
