KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A German woman who lost her arm in a shark attack at a Maui beach last week has died, according to officials at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The 20-year-old tourist, previously identified as Jana Lutteropp, was snorkeling off Palauea Beach last Wednesday August 14, when the attack happened. She lost her right arm and remained in the hospital for one week on life support.
Jutta Lutteropp and Julia Broeske, the mother and sister of the victim, issued the following statement today:
Jana fought hard to stay alive. However, we are sad to say that she lost her fight today.
Jana was a very beautiful, strong, young woman who was always laughing, and we will forever remember her that way.
We appreciate all the support from the Maui community, as well as the prayers and thoughts from around the world and in Germany.
We especially want to thank the wonderful caregivers and everyone at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The family requests that any donations be made to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation in memory of Jana Lutteropp.
Rick Moore, from California, was among those whorescued her. When he heard the sad news he says he went numb.
"I feel totally sad for the family. Extremely heartbroken for her passing. I'm extremely bummed and in disbelief that she passed and extremely devastated by what happened," said Rick Moore, rescuer. "In life you wish the story would end up a lot better. You wish it would end in a great story and she would have recovered and led a beautiful life. In life, sometimes stories don't end up that way."
DLNR Chairperson William Aila also expressed his condolences in this statement:
We are deeply saddened to learn of Ms. Jana Lutteropp's passing today. We join with Hawaii's people to extend our deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
As an island state, we are aware that we are all visitors in the natural environment that surrounds us, and that unfortunate incidents such as this one can occur. We are committed to furthering research efforts that will help guide effective management actions in the interest of safety.
The last fatal shark attack to occur in Hawaii was in April 2004 when 57-year-old surfer Willis McInnis was attacked while in the water off Maui's Pohaku Park.
