Toledo Police Sergeant returns woman's bike

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Norma Jean loves to ride her bike. To Norma, her bike is her freedom.

"I love to ride my bike, it gets me out and you know that way I'm not cooped up."

So when Norma's bike was stolen a week ago, it broke her heart.

"When I looked out my window and saw that it wasn't there, it was, I don't know, just very painful," said Jean. "Without my bike, I think I'd be lost."

That's where Sgt. Pete Lavey comes into the picture. Having met Norma before, he knew when he saw her on a different bike a few days ago, something was wrong.

She told him her bike was stolen and the one she was riding just wasn't the same, but at least the seat was like her old one. Then Sgt. Lavey got a tip about a bike in the creek.

"I stopped and I looked, and I see this bike in the creek and it's got the same exact seat that Norma's bike had this morning," said St. Lavey "I bet you I know whose bike that is."

Sgt. Lavey rescued the bike out of the creek, and brought it to Jean to identify.

"I went over and I said, 'yes, it's my bike' and I said you know, 'I think I'm going to pass out! I can't believe you guys found my bike," said Jean.

"She gave me a big hug, which was plenty enough for me just to know she was happy to get it back," said Sgt. Lavey "And then she even went around and wrote me a little note, a thank you note and called me the number one police officer in the state of Ohio, I can't disagree with that."
