PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Law enforcement authorities are investigating two fatal officer-involved shootings in different parts of the Valley that happened about an hour apart.

The first happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Fifth Street and Euclid Avenue.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Mesa police were conducting surveillance on Joseph Mavis, 27, who was wanted on charges of domestic violence and aggravated assault.

Law enforcement set up a perimeter outside the home Mavis was in, waited for him to step outside and when he did, they issued commands that he ignored, Martos said.

Mavis began reaching for a gun in his pocket, Martos said.

A Mesa Police Department Task Force member fired a sage round, which is a less lethal round, striking the suspect. Mavis then raised the gun at officers, Martos said.

The five task force members all opened fire, killing the suspect.

No officers were injured.

The second shooting happened about an hour later near Greenway and 32nd Street around 8:30 p.m.

Martos said Jonathan Tricarico, 29, was killed after a pursuit that began in Mesa in which officer tried to pull him over in a vehicle reported stolen earlier Friday in Chandler.

Martos said Tricarico failed to yield and fled. Shortly after fleeing, the driver slowed enough to allow two women passengers to exit the vehicle. Mesa police officers took the women into custody.

Officers in unmarked vehicles were able to continue surveillance of the stolen vehicle with help from the Mesa Police Department's air unit. Officers in unmarked vehicles followed this driver as he traveled through parts of Mesa, Scottsdale and Phoenix.

The driver eventually bailed from the vehicle in the area of 3200 East Greenway Road in Phoenix. Officers observed the driver as he walked up to a fast food restaurant while holding a gun in his hand, Martos said.

Officers identified themselves and confronted the suspect, who took off running southbound through the parking lot and across Greenway Road. Mesa officers pursued the suspect in their vehicles as he fled on foot.

At Greenway Road, the suspect turned back and fired multiple rounds at the officers, striking their unmarked police vehicles, Martos said.

Seven Mesa police officers returned fire, killing the suspect. Officers said they observed the gun still in the suspect's hand and released K-9 "Jake" prior to approaching.
