LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A home, where hoarding continued for years, was stripped to framing and baseboards Saturday.
A disabled woman, living in what neighbors call inhumane conditions, received support and assistance after an unlikely call for help. Dozens of neighbors devoted their weekend to provide her a clean slate and new direction.
Donning surgical masks and grasping trash bags, volunteers worked to clear feces, dirt and grime out of a Pleasure Ridge Park house that's been without electricity and running water.
"The stench alone is absorbed in every single pore, in every wall, every floor in this house," volunteer Brian Bailey said. "It just needs to be remedied."
The homeowner, who's referred to as Mary, lived in the house for four years without plumbing. "It's so saturated, saturated down to the wood, that I don't even know if the wood sub-floor underneath Mary's carpet is salvageable. We're just getting down to that point to figure that out. Her dog isn't trained," Bailey said.
Over the summer Mary asked a stranger for a favor. "Mary just happened to stop a man cutting grass at a church and say, 'I am in trouble with the city, my grass is really tall and I don't have the means to cut it.' "
A kindhearted man offered to mow her yard, but discovered much more beyond the overgrown grass.
Without judgement or prejudice, neighbors put a call out for help on Facebook and then set a date and time.
Volunteers like Teresa Johnson didn't know Mary until recently. "It warms my heart to know there's still good people around," Johnson said.
Mary has asked for her name and address remain anonymous, but welcomed WAVE 3 News to tell her story about what happens when neighbors choose to notice instead of ignore.
"It's getting done quickly because there are so many, so many great people. Everyone came together and made something happen fast," Johnson said.
Most of the volunteers didn't know each other until they joined the I am Dixie Highway Facebook group. You can find out how to help or make a difference by clicking here.
