CPS, Qualls seek safer routes to school

EVANSTON, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati Public School (CPS) students completed their first full week back to school on Monday, and city leaders are now focusing their efforts on the route to and from school.

Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls and CPS Superintendent Mary Ronan spoke Monday about the need to implement a district-wide travel plan to ensure safe routes for students to walk and bike to school.

Qualls introduced a motion last fall for the city to adopt the plan and start making priority improvements, including crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signals with funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

"When students are assisted by pedestrian-friendly improvements and motorists use caution, it's a win-win for all of us," said Ronan while speaking at the five-points intersection in Evanston.

The intersection, Woodburn, Montgomery, Gilbert and Hewitt, is one of the 15 intersections identified as a "high-priority" improvement and is located near Evanston Academy, the Academy of World Languages and Walnut Hills High School.

Better defined crosswalks and pedestrian countdown signals have been recommended as low-cost improvements.
