LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) -

Police say a man who saw a toddler wandering away from a play area at a Lexington park Monday afternoon may have averted a very dangerous situation.

According to the Lexington Police Department, the incident happened at Virginia Hylton Park around 5 p.m.

Officers arrived to the scene less than four minutes after a 911 call was placed from the park complaining of an attempted child abduction.

Police say an investigation revealed that a three-year-old was following an unknown man who was leaving the park.

Video surveillance shows the man preventing the boy from leaving by escorting the child back toward the park area.

The man then encountered a woman who was leaving the restroom and asked if she knew the child or his parents. The woman said yes and then escorted the child back to his mother who was still in the park.

Police Chief Terrence Green expressed his thanks to the unknown citizen, "for averting what could have been a far worse situation had the child wandered further away from the safety of the park."

Police remind citizens that emergency call boxes are located within all town parks for any emergency situations.
