PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Work performed by a county inmate crew helped save the city of Prescott thousands of dollars in future flood damage, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.

A 12-inmate crew cleared two blocked culverts during the week of Aug. 12. The detention staff overseeing inmate work crew assignments agreed to take on the task. The culverts are each 50 feet long, 5 1/2 feet tall and 8 feet wide.

The inmates, armed with picks, shovels and wheelbarrows, moved more than 1,000 cubic yards of dirt and debris that had been accumulating for 70 years.

In July, a seven inmate crew - all women - removed trash and debris along a three-mile stretch of Willow Lake Road in Prescott. A few days later, a crew of eight male inmate workers cleaned up trash and flood debris from recent monsoons along Highway 89, between Willow Lake Road and the Yavpe connector road in Prescott.

Inmates who took part were screened and considered minimum custody, YCSO said. Workers received credit against their daily meal expense and a small weekly allowance.
