AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A family lost their four pets in a fire that was far too advanced for firefighters to save them or the structure on a county island in south Avondale on Wednesday morning.

There are no fire hydrants on the county island near 115th and Southern avenues, but "the fire had a significant head start, even before 911 was called," said Colin Williams of Rural/Metro Fire.

He said fire units started to shuttle water to the scene but even if hydrants had been accessible, the fire was too involved by the time firefighters arrived.

A man living at the house said he woke to the fire on his back patio about 2:45 a.m. He alerted the other three family members in the house, but was unable to grab the family's two dogs and two cats.

Smoke was pouring out of the roof when Rural/Metro arrived, Williams said, and Avondale, Buckeye, Goodyear and Phoenix firefighters were also called in.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was still under investigation, Williams said.
