Former finance director arrested, charged with stealing Winsted's money

WINSTED, CT (WFSB) -

The town of Winsted is missing $2 million and the former finance director is accused of taking it.

After months of looking at town audits and other records, state police arrested Henry Centrella, who had been in charge of the town's finances for over 30 years. He was charged with five counts of first-degree larceny.

Centrella was arraigned at Litchfield Superior Court Friday. He is being held on a $100,000 bond  following his court appearance.

Centrella, who is known to many in town as Hank, hid from the cameras as he was taken with the other inmates to jail.

Eyewitness News went to Centrella's home on Gilbert Avenue, but no one came to the door when the station was there.

"It's hard to believe, no one knew," said Phillip Allen, of Winsted.

Residents told Eyewitness News that there could be more arrests.

"I am not sure, but I would say that anyone at town hall, who's been an incumbent for a while, is being looked at carefully," Allen said.

Residents told Eyewitness News they were encouraged the town has hired a new finance director and there seems to be an effort on the part of the town to put more checks and balances in place.
