ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
CBS Atlanta News has unofficially broken the Guinness World Record for most paper collected in 24 hours at the Great Shredder Event.
The goal was to collect at least 84 tons of paper - bills, tax statements, banks statements and other items that contain personal information.
Final totals from today's event - 275,750 lbs - that is 137.87 tons of paper!
"I have a small business and I purge every 10 years, you know, try to get it out so I saw the ad for it and thought this was a good time to do it," said Claire Moynihan of Atlanta as she waited in line.
Some started lining up by 5 a.m., hours before the gates opened.
"We were going to go get coffee first and we decided to stop by, saw the lines, and said we'll just get in and go get coffee afterwards," said Wayne Crockett, who had old military papers he needed to destroy.
The Great Shredder Event was free and presented by Recall, an information security company based in Norcross.
"We know that identity theft is running rampant," said Recall Vice President Tim McBride. "We know that there's a legal responsibility and a moral obligation for all businesses to protect, not just their employees information, but the customer's information as well."
Many said they cleaned out closets and files and found a lot of items with personal information.
"I've got ten years worth of bank statements, tax returns, all kinds of good stuff," said Sherrill Murray. "I was planning to have a fire in my back yard so this is better."
Guinness Book of World Records must still officially certify the amount of paper collected.
In addition to the paper that was collected, we diverted 26,738 pounds of electronic waste from our Georgia landfills!
And the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Georgia collected more than 750 pounds of food, 10 pallets of clothing, and $1,700 in raffle earnings and monetary donations.
