SPRING GROVE VILLAGE, OH (FOX19) -

Hundreds gathered at Spring Grove Cemetery in memory of those heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

On that fateful day, Stephen Siller- a Brooklyn firefighter, husband and father of five- was off-duty and on his way home to golf with his brothers. When he heard that the World Trade Center had been hit, Siller headed towards the site.

The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was already closed for security reasons, so Siller strapped his 65 pound equipment on his back and raced on foot to the site. Stephen laid down his life for others on that fateful day.

Tunnel to Tower runs are being held across the country as a living 9/11 memorial tribute to Siller and all others who sacrificed their lives that day.

Cincinnati honored the fallen at Spring Grove Cemetery on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. with a 5K.

New York firefighter Karl Suter was in attendance along with a four-man team from South Carolina. They will be running three of the Tunnel to Towers satellite runs in three states on consecutive days to help raise awareness. The firefighter ran the 5K in full turnout gear.

Proceeds from the event will benefit an Ohio veteran. The triple amputee will be receiving a smart home thanks to proceeds from the event.
