San Fran start-up wants pedal power to charge your phone

SAN FRANCISCO (FOX19) -

A San Francisco company is ready to launch a new power source for your smartphone…your bicycle.

Siva Cycle has developed the Atom. The Atom is a generator that attaches to a bicycle to turn your pedal power into a charge for any USB device.

Here's how it works; as you ride, the spin of the wheel engages the generator which creates electricity that's regulated and passed through to the battery pack, USB or both.

The charge rate is the same as the USB output from your computer, which means your device will go from fully flat to fully charged, just as fast on the bike as it would sitting on your desk.

The creators say the Atom weighs the same as a paperback book and is attached to the axle of any standard bike.

Siva launched a Kickstarter campaign in April and quickly exceeded their funding goals, getting $126,085 in pledges by May 23.

The Atom is available for presale now. It will ship in November and costs $99.

Part of the project is to give this power to developing nations in need of local, renewable sources of energy so Siva has pledged to donate 1 Atom for every 10 purchased.
