Retailers already pushing holiday merchandise, may get coal for Christmas

SPRINGDALE (FOX19/CNN) – If you go to the Costco in Springdale, one of the first aisles you'll come across is full of Christmas decorations. They've been there for weeks. And Costco isn't alone. Kmart is out with a new holiday ad more than three months before the big day. Walmart and Toys 'R Us have already released their lists of the hottest toys.

It seems retailers can't wait for the holiday shopping season to begin --- or to try to entice us to shop before Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that usually marks its beginning. There are six fewer traditional shopping days this year because Thanksgiving comes later on the calendar.

When shoppers do hit the aisles to buy holiday presents, retailers may not be very excited with the results. ShopperTrak predicts holiday sales will rise only 2.4 percent, the lowest level since 2009 when we were just beginning to emerge from the depths of the Great Recession.
