DA: Vanderbilt QB wrongly identified in ties to rape case

Vanderbilt University quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels was wrongly identified as having participating in moving the victim of an alleged rape in a campus dorm, according to the Nashville district attorney's office.

At a plea agreement hearing last week for now-dismissed wide receiver Chris Boyd, prosecutors read aloud text messages that were exchanged between suspects in the case.

One text from Boyd to former teammate Corey Batey read, in part: "Me, Carta and Vanderwal and Vandenburg helped us move her out of the hallway," referring to the victim who was lying in the hall of the dorm and also referencing tight end Dillon van der Wal.

The district attorney's office said Tuesday that evidence now indicates Boyd wrongly identified Austyn Carta-Samuels as someone who participated in helping move the victim.

Boyd was dismissed from the football team Tuesday afternoon.

Carta-Samuels and van der Wal are both still listed as witnesses in the rape case against four former Vanderbilt students - Brandon Banks, Corey Batey, Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie and Brandon Vandenburg.

The district attorney's office said van der Wal and another student - who has not been identified - were involved in moving the victim, but that act alone does not constitute a crime.

The DA's office also says when Boyd swore under oath regarding the text messages, he was just agreeing that he did indeed send and receive those texts that were read aloud in court, not that the contents of them were true.

Attorney Ben Raybun, who is not involved with the case, spoke about that.

"It's tough to know how that happened and why Mr. Boyd texted in an incorrect name," Raybun said. "It is true that he sent that text message. Mr. Boyd was not necessarily required to confirm that the contents of that text message were true."
