GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

A seventh-grade science teacher in Groton is in desperate need of a kidney, and now his co-workers are reaching out to the community to find a donor.

According to BlogCEA, West Side Middle School teacher Brad Vernet has stage 4 kidney disease, and after living with the disease for years, his kidney function began to dramatically drop over the past year and a half.

"Because a living kidney donor is really the best option for me, I really need to make people aware of that. It's an unusual situation to be in," Vernet told the blog.

Vernet said the response he has received from his colleagues has been amazing.

"I've been getting emails and phone calls," she told the blog. "Now that I'm seeing colleagues again as I go into school to set up my classroom, people have been very supportive. It can be pretty emotional."

According to the blog, Vernet is a patient at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and is in the process of trying to find a live donor.

Few kidneys are available and waiting for a live donor can be a long process, but a kidney from a living donor lasts a lot longer than getting one from someone who has died and may lead to a better outcome for him.

Brad and his wife Katy, who is a teacher at Claude Chester School in Groton, said they want to get the word out and want anyone who is interesting in seeing if they can donate to contact Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston to begin the confidential process.
