Sylvania fire station construction requires more money

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Construction on Sylvania's fire station is moving along, but not without a few added costs.

Sylvania Township Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski requested an additional $46,000 from trustees. Kowalski says $20,000 will be used for a generator and other items, and about $10,000 will be used for additions mandated by building codes.

"The rest of the funds, about $20,000 worth, were upgrades," he said. "I felt that by making the upgrades to the station, it would improve the efficiency of the station, and it would also improve the reliability of the station."

Kowalski says they have cut back in other ways, saving about $9,500 so far, but Trustee Kevin Haddad says the township is now over budget and way over on costs.

Haddad says if the fire station had been relocated anywhere other than its current location, the township would have accommodated those costs.

"We had all these extra things that nobody put in the original bid, because nobody investigated this before they accepted the bid," Haddad said. "Right now, the cost of the fire station is at the third to fourth lowest bid out of the eight or nine bids that we had."

Right now, the total cost is at $2.292 million. Haddad says money is coming out of the general fund to cover the overages, but Kowalski and Trustee John Jennewine say that is not true. They say it is 3 percent over the original estimate, but still under the $2.3 million budget.
