Springfield Twp gets new ambulance

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Springfield Township Fire Department has added a new ambulance to its command fleet.

The new 2013 McCoy Miller ambulance goes into service Friday. It was ordered in December of 2012 and arrived at the department two weeks ago. Since then, crews have been training to learn the new vehicle.

The ambulance replaces a 1989 Ford ambulance that the department sold in an online auction for $2,200. Fire Chief Barry Cousino says that money has been added to the general fund for equipment purchases.

The chief says the new ambulance will cut down on repair and service costs, and should last more than 30 years.

"This is going to provide a smoother ride for the patient and for the crew members," Cousino said. "We had some issues or some concerns in the past with potential breakdown while you're transporting a patient to the hospital."

Cousino says the new ambulance, which cost $159,000, was budgeted for last year. He says funds from the township's service contract with the Village of Holland help make purchases like these.
