Residents hope fire station renovation leads to neighborhood revival

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With the city of Toledo spending $3 million on the renovation of Fire Station 3 in north Toledo, neighbors are hoping that investment will lead to a real neighborhood revival.

As crews work to restore and expand the fire house at Erie and Bush, you don't have to go far to find blighted properties - vacant, abandoned buildings or properties not being properly maintained.

Neighborhood Block Watch leader Sy Kreais is urging the city to shine the spotlight on the area, to help leverage the community investment being made.

"I think if they kind of saturate this area a little more, it will come back. I've lived here almost 55 years. I've seen it in great times," said Kreais.

There are signs of neighbors taking matters into their own hands. Debra Pearson, a Woodward High School grad, is renovating a building at Lagrange and Michigan, where she's planning to open a barber shop/salon business later this year.

"My vision for this building and this area is to bring it back to the way it was. It's a family-based tradition here, where neighbors all know each other," said Pearson.

Pearson wants to be part of the foundation to revive the area.

"I really wanted to bring something back to this neighborhood. I could have gone anywhere," said Pearson.

Kreais is hoping other property owners take notice.

"I'm hoping tenants and landlords take hope and try to clean up this area a little better," said Kreais.
