Woman shaving head for childhood cancer research

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Hair means a lot to most women.

But for Northwood's Angelina Schilt it's a way to raise money for a good cause, by shaving it off.

"In March I was looking for something to do for my 33rd birthday. I wanted to do something big. With five kids Vegas or a party bus didn't really seem like something I should do," said Ms. Schilt.

So Angelina, or Angie, started looking online, trying to find a way to celebrate her birthday by giving back to the community.

That's when she found St. Baldrick's, and decided to shave her head, to raise money for childhood cancer research.

"Children go through the same treatments adults do for cancer. The pokes, the tests, they lose their hair too before a birthday, before first communions, before prom and they've got cancer. If I can lose my hair and I don't have to fight cancer, then that's the least I can do," said Ms. Schilt.

She's hoping to raise at least $3,300 to donate to the cause.

Even though Angie says she and her family have never had it easy, she can't imagine what it's like to lose a child.

"We're still so lucky compared to the parents that have to explain to young children what's wrong with them, why they're getting poked so many times, explain to siblings after a brother or sister has passed, what happened to their big brother, why isn't their little sister there anymore," she said.

Angie, along with others, will be shaving their heads at the Westfield Franklin Park Mall on Saturday.

The event lasts from noon to 3pm.

You can still donate to help out Angie for 2 more weeks here.
