'Skittles' parties draw concerns of prescription drug abuse

LEBANON, TN (WSMV) -

The name of a popular kind of candy has been redefined and is now synonymous with a dangerous trend. If you overhear your son or daughter talk about something called a "Skittles" party, there's reason to worry.

Officials in Middle Tennessee report an upswing of the potentially lethal trend in which people mix together a rainbow array of prescription pills and pop them in their mouths like candy.

"The parents don't understand the prevalence of the problem. They spend so much time talking about the illegal drugs which they don't come across that often. The prescription pills are often ignored," said Cpl. Walker Woods, a school resource officer in the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.

At a Skittles party, attendees raid a medicine cabinet in search of pills, including everything from hydrocodone to Adderall. The meds are then tossed into a big bowl and distributed through the night.

Next week, school resource officers for the Lebanon Special School District will hold a meeting to let parents know what they're up against.

"It's not just a candy. It poses a great danger to our kids and our students. It's something their parents really need to be aware of," said Lebanon Special Schools Superintendent Scott Benson.

The best thing you can do as a parent is cut off their source.

"Count your prescription mediation, and, if possible, just keep it locked up," Woods said.
