15-year-old girl dies in Hillsboro fire

HILLSBORO, OH (FOX19) -

A 15-year-old girl is dead following an early morning fire in Hillsboro.

Authorities say that the fire broke out Tuesday morning around 6 a.m. on Bigelow Street. Officials confirmed Hazel Morris, 15, died in the blaze.

"The porch was fully engulfed, the windows and stuff, flames were starting to come out the windows," said John Duncan, a neighbor to the Morris family.

Duncan says Hazel's younger brother, Alex, came over to their house when the fire broke out to get help for his sister.

Officials say their parents were already at work for the day.

"I was going to try and go through the front door but I couldn't. It was too hot so I went to the side of the house but the windows were too high, and I couldn't get up to them," said Duncan.

Duncan was unable to save Hazel by himself. Minutes later fire crews arrived, but it was too late.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Neighbors say the Morris family was renting the home. Fire officials also tell FOX19 no smoke detectors were present inside the home.

Morris was a freshman at Hillsboro High School.

The principle of the school tells FOX19 that grief counselors will be on hand Wednesday to help friends and classmates cope with the loss. A moment of silence was held for Hazel at the high school on Tuesday.
