LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two Jefferson County public schools were placed on a lockdown when a teenager allegedly brought a gun to the parking lot of a high school.

Around 10:30 a.m., law enforcement personnel swarmed Tyler Abshire's vehicle behind Doss High School at 7601 St. Andrews Church Road when JCPS received an anonymous tip that he allegedly had a gun inside a car. Doss and nearby Trunnell Elementary School were put on lockdown. Both schools resumed normal operations by noon.

Abshire, 18, is charged with unlawful possession of a handgun on school property. Ben Jackey, a JCPS spokesperson, confirmed Abshire is not a Doss student, but said he previously attended a JCPS school.

"We are told there was no threat to students or Doss faculty in connection with this incident," said Jackey, "but out of an abundance of caution, they wanted to go on lockdown until the situation was resolved."

Officials are investigating why Abshire visited Doss high school Wednesday morning.

"That's something we're looking into," said Jackey. "Our staff is talking to students and LMPD is talking to the suspect."

The scene unfolded across the street from 360 Salon and Spa where parents like Marilyn Harmon ponder what it takes to prevent a similar incident happening again.

"I feel like a lot of people need to be really concerned about their kids and say, wait a minute, (security) needs to examine you before you go to school and make sure you're not carrying anything," said Harmon.

Jackey said parents will receive a letter informing them of the situation.
