BOONE COUNTY, KY (FOX19) - Northbound I-71 is back open in Boone County after a semi-truck caught fire early Thursday, resulting in road closures and a day-long cleanup.
A semi carrying 50 pound bags of processed animal fat caught fire on just before the 71/75 split.
Northbound 71 was entirely shutdown near the scene for most of the day. The road briefly reopened but had to be shut back down when the fat caught fire again.
Around 7 p.m., the far left lane opened to traffic.
The saga continued when the roadway was shut down again around 10 p.m. as crews worked to upright the truck. About an hour later, authorities said the road had, in fact, reopened for drivers.
Crews remained at the scene most of the day working to put out hot spots. Northbound traffic was diverted on Exit 72 to KY 42 as a detour.
