Petersburg woman first in Indiana to get artificial pancreas

PETERSBURG, IN (WFIE) -

There's been a major breakthrough for patients with type one diabetes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just approved a new device that could change lives, including the life of one Tri-State woman.

The new device is being called an "artificial pancreas."

For those with type one diabetes, this is something to be excited about.

According to the maker of the device, Medtronic, Fran Lewis, a Petersburg resident, will be the first person in the state of Indiana to receive it.

Medtronic's mini-med 530g is an advanced insulin pump.

A traditional insulin pump will deliver insulin, or not, after the patient enters information into it.

This information includes blood sugar number, or the amount of food being eaten.

Now, with this new device, a patient's blood sugars will be consistently monitored. If their sugar is falling, the pump will alert the patient and then automatically stop delivering insulin.

"For me, that means when I go to bed at night, I'm not going to have to have my family worry that they're going to come in and find me in the morning sleeping because I'm not awake because my blood sugar numbers have gotten so low," Lewis said.

She says she has to wait a few weeks to retrieve the device. She says once it gets here, she will put it in good use.
