A sculpture sold for cash at a local scrap yard has Toledo police looking for answers. One man has been arrested but one is still on the run.
Police say the metal sculpture with distinct inscribing was stolen from an apartment on Glenwood Avenue. According to their research, it was created by Joann Cousino, who is now deceased. It was on display at her son, Richard's residence, along with five others valued at more than $20,000.
The item was sold to Sims Metal Management on Hill and Westwood avenues Sept. 23. When staff realized the piece was not something to scrap, they notified officials.
Cousino had recently been away from his residence and asked his friend, Timothy Blair, to look after his home while he was away. He had no idea Blair turned out to be the thief until police explained what happened, following his arrest Thursday afternoon.
Det. Sgt. Michael McGee says Sims Metal Management deserves a lot of credit.
"This worked out very well. I mean, it worked out very well because of the fact that they did the right thing. You know? They didn't cut this up. They recognized it as something of value, and probability of it being stolen," said McGee.
Blair has been charged with felony theft. The Toledo Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for William Redlin for felony theft, as well. Anyone with information on his whereabouts can call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
