Principal: Beechwood students on DC trip are safe

FORT MITCHELL, KY (FOX19) - We've learned students from Beechwood Elementary School visited the U.S. Capitol building prior to a lockdown Thursday afternoon.

Sixth grade students were in Washington D.C. for a class trip and posed for a photo Thursday morning on Capitol Hill. Just hours later, authorities received reports of multiple shots fired and the entire area was put on lockdown.

Beechwood Principal Jamie Flaherty says all students on the trip are safe and accounted for. She says the events Thursday afternoon will have no impact on their plans while in D.C.

Flaherty says all parents of students on the trip have been notified.

Beechwood Elementary is located in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
