12 ON YOUR SIDE: City repairs side walk for elderly Richmond woman

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

An elderly Richmond woman with physical disabilities got the steps and sidewalk she wanted, and needed, after calling 12 On Your Side.

Nancy Anderson couldn't be happier. She says the Richmond City crew got the job done, even with her watching them every step of the way.

It's obvious, she loves her sidewalk and steps.

"Look, those are beautiful steps, aren't they?" said Anderson. "Nice wide steps too. The prettiest steps in the block."

Steps and sidewalks are normally not objects of admiration, unless you're Nancy Anderson, with a steep grassy slope between your home and the curb.

"I'm a 75-year-old handicap senior. I walk with a rollator. I have a full leg brace and I have an ankle brace on too," said Anderson. "It's real hard to get up and down that hill, especially when it rains. I had to use my neighbor's steps."

Roots from a city-owned tree buckled the side walk, and a limb crumbled the steps. The diseased tree was taken down, but the city took too long returning to fix the damage - so Nancy called 12.

I contacted the city and it realized it should have happened sooner and immediately stepped up. Nancy had patiently waited her turn and the city understood her predicament.

"That's all it took. She called the city and the lady from the city called me," said Anderson. "They took so much time fixing the sidewalk and putting the lines and everything in. Ain't they beautiful? I got a sidewalk and steps."

Now Nancy wants a handicap sign on the street outside her home and a new tree.

If you have a similar problem needing the city's attention, go online to Richmond.gov and click "citizens request system."
