Beloved crossing guard robbed of false teeth, hearing aid

(WMC-TV) - A man robbed a Mid-South crossing guard at gunpoint, taking off with her purse, false teeth, and hearing aid.

The Action News 5 Investigators and the community are fighting for the crossing guard who was forced to fight an armed robber.  She lost a few items essential to her day-to-day in the process.

Students and parents know her as Miss Linda, a veteran crossing guard at Richland Elementary School. She has arguably touched the hearts of everyone who has crossed her path.

"We just love her. She's great. She knows all the kids and recognizes everybody and so sweet," said parent Becca Crislip.

After 30 years helping families avoid danger, Linda Foster found herself in a dangerous predicament at a Bank of America ATM on Summer Avenue.

"As I went to the bank, this man came up and he looked in the car, and he said, 'Get out,' " recalled Foster.

Foster fought back, hitting and kicking her attacker.

"I may be 65 almost, but I wasn't going to give some 18-year-old punk my car. That's when he pulled the gun and put it on my chest," she said. "And I thought to myself, 'I'm fixing to die.'"

That is when a passerby yelled at the man and startled him.

"And he got scared and then he reached over there and got my purse that had my teeth and my hearing aid in it," she said.

Foster was back at work the next day, although she was shaken.

"Somebody tried to kill me ... but I'm alive," said Foster.

She also worries about the kids.

"Somebody has to get the babies across the street, and that's me," said Foster.

And she wonders about her important personal belongings.

"How do I go through life with no teeth and no hearing aid? I guess I'll just have to put my hand in front of my mouth forever and I can't hear anybody anymore," she said.

The Action News 5 Investigators reached out to Dr. Bill Smith at DentalCares, and he immediately offered to help. DentalCares is giving Foster a brand new upper and lower denture at no charge.

"It's unfortunate that this happened at all, but because it was a violent crime, we felt compelled to help her because somebody had to step up," said Dr. Smith.

And that is not all: Joe Pickler at Hearing Aids by Zounds offered to give Foster a state-of-the-art hearing aid.

"If I can help somebody then I'm, I'm very fortunate," said Pickler.

After all Linda Foster has done for her community, her community wanted to give back.

"I know it was stupid for me to fight, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat," said Foster. "I still can't believe that somebody would do something like that to an old lady.  'Cause I never hurt anybody in my life ... I'm not mad at him. I feel sorry for him, ya know. I prayed for him last night. I'm thankful I think God intervened. I'm very thankful, I thank everybody. I'm a very, very, very fortunate crossing guard."

Memphis police have made no arrests in the attack reported last Tuesday. Call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH if you have information about the crime.
