CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Alumni from the School of Creative and Performing Arts are speaking out against proposed changes to the school's logo.
Several individuals protested at the school's board meeting on Monday evening. Protestors claim that the SCPA is using the new logo online without the approval from Cincinnati Public Schools.
"Tonight, we're here opposing any change to our school logo," explains Robbie Todd, a class of 1982 alumni. "It seems that the principle, without any authorization from the board or the SCPA LSDMC, decided to change the logo on his own. We're trying to figure out who he thinks he is that he can change our iconic logo that has been around for almost 40 years and that's known worldwide."
Todd explains that the logo means more than people believe. SCPA was founded in 1973 as part of a lawsuit against Cincinnati Public Schools for segregation. SCPA was created out of this lawsuit along with a series of magnet schools. Todd says that the old logo was intentionally designed as black and white to show a racial union present in the school.
"I challenge anyone to find any other school in the world to say our colors mean that," said Todd. "Erv Raible, an art teacher at this school, created the logo in 1974. Since 1974, this has been the iconic brand of the school. We're not going to stand by and have that changed by anyone."
FOX19 attempted to reach out to SCPA's president, but did not get a response.
