RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A promising VCU art student died early Sunday morning, after she fell and hit her head during an off-campus party in the Fan.

Emma E. Munson, 19, was with friends at 11 S. Morris St. late Saturday night. Just before midnight, Munson fell down a flight of stairs and was rushed to VCU Medical Center. She was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.

"We're a really tight knit community here, and to lose someone in such a way that could happen to anyone, is shocking," said VCU sophomore Moriah Bazlamit. "It's a reality check… I'm shocked, upset because she's my age. And something like that could happen to anyone."

Richmond Police said there is no evidence of foul play, and could not confirm reports of underage drinking at the party. VCU Police said Tuesday the matter is being handled by the Richmond Police Department.

Munson was from the Pittsburgh area, where she won a national award in 2012 for one of her paintings. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Munson received a national gold medal in the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program for an acrylic painting titled, The Room.

Munson told the Tribune-Review in a January interview that she would plan to stay within an artistic field, no matter what major she ultimately pursued.

"I'll try for art in college and see what happens," she said. "I live by the day and see where it takes me."
