Robbery suspect escapes police in BG cornfield

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green Police have spent hours searching fields along Sand Ridge and Wintergarden roads looking for a suspected robber. Now they need help from the public.

A woman came home to a house on the 1400 block of Sand Ridge Road Tuesday night to find a stranger inside. When police responded, they noticed a man walking down the road nearby.

Police say when the suspect spotted the officers around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, he ran straight into a cornfield where he hid. The surrounding roads were roped off until 1 a.m.

"They turned around and attempted to confront him, and as soon as he turned on the spotlight to illuminate the subject, he darted into a cornfield," said Major Tony Hetrick.

Police say they had the perimeter secure, but the suspect managed to get away.

"We have about 4-5 officers on duty at any given time, so to cover the miles around this area, there's going to be some gaps until you get more units in," Hetrick explained.

The victim of the robbery didn't want her identity revealed. Police couldn't say what was stolen, but they do say she was targeted by the suspect.

Police also warn others in the area to use caution and report any suspicious activity until the suspect is behind bars.
